It’s now the year of the Dragon!  If you are a Dragon, it’s good luck to wear something red everyday this year.  Many people opt for red underwear or a red bracelet.

Also, you shouldn’t clean your house, or cut or wash your hair for the next 5 days.  You wouldn’t want to wash away your good luck or blessings.  Happy New Year! 新年快乐!

Featured Artist Wednesday - Laura Lou Smith

Former Memphis resident artist and current Shanghai EFL Teacher (and all around Badass), Lauren Louise Smith reflects on her location change and the barriers to overcome when producing work.

From the artist:

Living in China has presented so many obstacles in my day to day life as well as in my work. I no longer have access to the supplies, resources, and interactions that formally influenced the work I made. However with these limitations in place, I find myself freed from the burden of options. I work in my sketchbook using gouache, watercolor, and ink… the materials available to me.

While many of these works are not altogether unified (such is the nature of a sketchbook), I believe all have a firm foundation on my interest in relationships. I enjoy exploring their sticky, complicated, sexual, and often comical nature.

“At best the artist does what he can rather than what he wants to do.” -LOUISE BOURGEOIS

Keep an eye out for more works including photography and day to day tidbits of her adjustments to Shanghai lifestyle at Lost Aesthetic.
